Trying to Court a Courtyard

This week, Pat O’s was officially awarded the coveted SBIG Award (So Bad It’s Good Award). Now on to reason number three…

Exhibit C: The Courtyard

Once you've made it to these gates, you're in the clear.
And remember, "No one can make you feel inferior without
your consent." - Eleanor Roosevelt
So Bad: It’s massive. Just freaking huge. I can deal with a decent amount of wandering to take place before I find my desired local in a bar; however, I really don’t want to stumble in off Bourbon Street to be thrust into Judgment Zone (a large stretch of Pat O’s restaurant, laden with old couples, families, children, and the occasional baby). I’m all for having a restaurant attached to a bar but it’s a different story when I’ve just consumed five drinks and I’m on quick a mission to consume five more. At this point I have committed no wrongs and thus should not be predisposed to a pre-8am walk of shame. Or else maybe these patrons deserve judgment right back for bringing a child to Bourbon Street to eat food that disgraces Louisiana’s culinary expertise (let me clarify, the expertise of frying is preserved, the expertise of succulence is not).

Let’s get this clear, Pat O’s, as a whole, practically occupies an entire square block. Which can be amazing, if you know your way around. But for newbies and drunkies, it’s likely you will enter on Bourbon Street, take a stroll through the courtyard, say “to hell if I have to walk all the way back through there again”, get stressed out that you don’t know where to begin yet you don’t want it to end and… Wham! you find yourself on… well, you’re not on Bourbon Street anymore. And that sure can that scare the crap out of an inexperienced little tourista!

It’s Good: I suppose, when observed from the right angle, the courtyard can be a slightly superb place to gather to enjoy a drink. The centrally located fountain can mesmerize beer goggled eyes like few I’ve seen in my day - and the rest of the patio-style ambiance is quite pleasing as well. And it does warm my heart to see such a large number of tourists and locals together in one place. Tourists because they heard that it was good, locals because they know that it’s still good and both united under a common understanding that one can both love and hate a Hurricane (drinks vs. natural disasters).

Uniting Alma Maters

Insider Tip:
Walk in sporting your Alma Mater on a Saturday afternoon in the fall and you are bound to be encompassed by friends and foes within a few short minutes. Thus, if you ever find yourself in a heated discussion over who’s football team can kill whoever else’s football team… quickly change the mood by buying a round of America-clad Budweiser’s and heatedly discuss how great it is that we all collectively killed Osama Bin Laden.

Coming Up: stay tuned for the last exhibit on why Pat O’s is So Bad It’s Good…
